Navigate
There are three main types of navigation: celestial navigation, GPS, and map and compass. Urban Survival has a wide range of compasses and GPS navigation suitable for outdoor activities such as; backpacking, camping, cycling, survival and bushcraft.
Compasses
From map compass to bearing compass, we supply various models directly from our own stock. For example, we have compasses in our range from Silva, Suunto and SOL (Survive Outdoor Longer).
Information: declination and inclination
Declination
A compass is actually nothing more than a magnet (needle) that points north. However, this magnetic North does not coincide with the North on the map. This deviation is also called declination. The declination varies per region and can quickly increase to 20° or more. So you have to correct. There are Suunto compasses with a declination correction. Then you correct once and you don't have to calculate the correct direction every time. So easy. The declination is specifically indicated on most maps.
Inclination
There is a second deviation that makes compassing difficult: Inclination. The magnetic field is not equally strong everywhere. This can cause the compass needle to become unbalanced and stuck against the glass of the rose. Compass makers therefore divide the world into five so-called inclination zones. You need a different compass for each zone. So five in total. Due to the special construction of the needle, Suunto only uses two inclination zones as standard and therefore only 2 different compasses for the entire world.
GPS
GPS means Global Positioning System. With the help of satellites, every point on the earth can be determined. A bicycle GPS device can receive that data.
On a GPS device, in addition to the coordinates, you can also see roads and cities, depending on the model. A handheld GPS therefore offers many options when it comes to navigation. Some of these GPS devices also have a function to receive and send messages. The Garmin GPS devices work with inReach technology. This requires a satellite subscription.
Urban Survival is a Garmin dealer and supplies Garmin GPS systems such as the Garmin GPSMAP and the Garmin Foretrex.
Garmin is the largest manufacturer of GPS devices for walking or cycling.
Accessories compass and GPS
In addition to compasses and GPS devices, Urban Survival also has accessories such as map covers and holders/cases for GPS devices.
Cases and pouches from Tatonka and Tasmanian Tiger protect your equipment from the elements. Available in different versions such as with belt loop or molle mounting system.
